NORTHERN CALIFORNIA - California has launched its first ever food waste prevention week encouraging all to take steps to reduce food waste.
Every year, Californians waste about 12 billion pounds of food.
Reducing your food waste has the potential to help millions of people in need of food in California.
The Environmental Protection Agency has some helpful tips on how to prevent waste.
• Plan meals for the week ahead before going shopping so you only buy items you absolutely need
• Freeze and preserve surplus fruits and veggies
• Prepare and cook perishable items as quickly as possible or freeze them
A study conducted by a national non-profit show each pound of food preserved could create 1.2 meals.
