Chico, Calif. -- Chico is a biking city, and now public works is trying to make it even more bike-friendly by turning several car lanes into bike lanes near the city plaza.

These new bike lanes are a joint effort between the city of Chico and the Chico Velo Cycling Club.

They're taking one of the two car lanes on 3rd & 4th streets from Flume to Salem and turning it into a buffered bike lane.

Bikram Kahlon is the senior traffic engineer with the city of Chico and said the idea is to provide a safer way for people to ride their bikes downtown, and this is a quick, temporary, and cheap solution to see what people think.

“We spent about $500 on materials, and most of the labor was provided by volunteers,” he said.

The lanes are temporary, either way they're going to get rid of them in May, right now they just want to know what people think and whether they should pursue this idea.

He said there is a project for buffered bike lanes in the Chico bike plan, so they decided to try it.

If people like it and they decide to implement it, Kahlon said it will be a long process because they'll have to think more about the design and also get it approved by the council.

Some people wonder if this will have any impact on car traffic during busier times, since those streets are now one lane instead of two, but he said they haven't gotten any of those kinds of complaints.

The main idea here is for them to learn how it impacts cars, bikes, people and just overall traffic in the city.

They want your feedback! Fill out this survey to submit it.
