How does the city of Chico get its funding and how are those dollars spent?
Those are some of the questions that will be answered Thursday morning during a Public Budget and Fiscal Workshop.
This workshop started two years ago in effort to be completely transparent with the people of Chico and show the challenges that come up while managing millions of dollars for a major city.
The workshop is a chance for tax-payers to understand the financial realities of municipal budgeting.
"Budget 101, I think is essential for any member of the community to understand how their city works. One of the other intentions is to speak to some of the challenges the city is having in relation to meeting the needs within the communit," said Mark Orme, Chico City Manager.
With an operating budget for the 2017-2018 fiscal year just shy of $115 million, city leaders are tasked with determining how, where and when that money is spent.
This includes pauing for services including public safety, police and fire, parks, roads and all other municipal services.
So how do*those in charge of governmental funds decide which services take priority?
"Allowing the community to understand the budget is extremely important. Most citizens have a savings account and sometimes a checking account, well the city has over 200 funds so it's a very complex entity. So when folks try to understand why is the city doing what they're doing with these funds, it will allow them to better understand that," said Orme.
The free budget workshop takes place at 10 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. Thursday morning.
It will be held on the second floor of the old municipal building, at 441 main street, in downtown Chico.
