Goats Aid in Fire Safety

WHISKEYTOWN, Calif - As Shasta County prepares for wildfire season, parts of Whiskeytown have called in the "big guns" and we 're not talking about firefighters.

The park contracted these goats to help clear brush and fuel that may burn when a fire starts.

"In Shasta County when it comes to fires it's not if, but when, so that outside chance you have a one-percent chance that a fire is up and running you did your best due diligence of reducing fire," said Jennifer Gibson with Whskeytown National Park.

These goats aren't only here for weed control, but they also help add fertilizer and defensive space around the historic structure, as well as maintain a cultural landscape.

"So this area has historic orchards and grazing was a huge part of maintaining the landscape so this is kind of neat this is an opportunity for us to use historic practices to maintain the landscape that you see Thursday," said Gibson.

Contractor Larry Davis, who began his North-West Goat Grazers business nearly a decade ago, says this industry wasn't always so busy but now his goats are asked to help cut down fire fuels all cross the coast.

"We work let's say from mid-March to let's say September or October generally its nonstop," said Davis.

And Whiskeytown is just one of their stops, that they plan on visiting consistently.

"Just repeated treatments we are going to need it. Using goats is cost effective the price is right it's meeting our objectives. So why not," said Gibson.
