It was the moment hundreds of people had gathered in downtown Frankfort for 28 stories, destroyed in just a few seconds.

“We just want to watch the building, brought the kids with us they seem to be really excited about it,” said Erin and Ryan Root.

“We’ve seen videos on buildings getting destroyed so we thought it would be interesting seeing it in person,” said Collin Moore.

The festival-like atmosphere stretched from the Transportation Building.

“In some measure, it will be the thrill of seeing a building come down but another measure as well it’s just a chance for us to come together as a community,” said Matt Bevin.

To the YMCA, just a few hundred yards away from the implosion.

“Fantastic, I’m a civil engineer training, been retired. It was marvelous I don’t know any other way to say it,” said Darrell Mach.

Most of the people I spoke to were from fairly close, but there were a few travelers, like this man who came from Ohio.

“That was really cool, actually it was better than I thought, I didn’t know it was going to be that quick coming down. All that power and energy to it was really neat,” said Brian Gibson, a man who drove from Ohio.

It went off without a hitch, but not without kicking up a mess.

Most of the crowd outran that cloud, and within a few minutes, the pile of rubble that was all that remained of the Capital Plaza Tower was clearly visible.

The building that will replace the tower is set to open in January of 2020.
