Hate Crime Rise in California

REDDING, Calif - Hate crimes in California have jumped more than 17 percent in 2017 compared to 2016.

The Department of Justice states this jump has particularly hit high with race, religion, and sexual orientation.

But the Associated Press reports quote "Critics feared his (President Donald Trump's) fiery rhetoric , particularly against Muslims and immigrants, might encourage more harassment."

In Shasta County and Redding however, religion based crimes don't seem to be an issue.

"I dont think that has affected Shasta County in any way. We just dont have that population here," said Chief of Police Roger Moore.

Action News Now worked with the Redding Police Department's statistician and the police chief to find out exactly where these local reported crimes come from.

Last year, the City of Redding had 17 reported hate crimes.

Most, if not all, race driven.

This chart shows three of those crimes were anti-Hispanics crimes, five were against Afrian Americans.

A statistic that hits home for this resident.

"oh people have used the N word. So she (my daughter) comes home and she tells me about it and she doesnt really want to go to Central High School," said

He adds, he's been working with the police department to make sure hate crimes stay low, especially after the 2004 spike.

The chief of police adds if people continue to report these crimes they can combat the issue.

"Its a sign to me especially with hate crimes. that our community trusts the police department and trusts us to do the right thing, " said Moore.
