UPDATE: Victim identified in fatal Interstate 5 crash near Redding

The CHP says that a wrong-way driver is to blame for this head-on collision.

Correction: California Highway Patrol first reported that the incident occurred north of Knighton Road, but has been changed to just south of Knighton Road. CHP told Action News Now the suspected wrong-way driver was driving a black Chevy Malibu, they have since changed that to 2009 gray Chevrolet Impala. 

UPDATE The Shasta County Sheriff's Office has identified the victim that died in a wrong-way crash on Interstate 5 near Knighton Road. 

Deputies said the victim is known as 29-year-old Ryan John Folsom of San Antonio, Texas. 

The next of kin has been notified and a postmortem autopsy will be scheduled. 

A wrong-way crash on  I-5 has left one person dead in Anderson.

The California Highway Patrol says on Sunday afternoon the driver of a 2009 gray Chevrolet Impala was headed north in the southbound fast lane when it hit another car head-on.

The CHP says that the person who was killed, was in a burgundy Honda accord.

Officers say the driver of the Impala identified as Grace Elizabeth Ward was going the wrong way, was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

“About a quarter after noon we got reports of a wrong way driver vehicle went through the center divider of the southbound 5 south of Knighton road. Shortly after that, we got a call of a vehicle collision with a car on fire,” said Annie Garcia, a sergeant for California Highway Patrol.

UPDATE - 3 p.m. All lanes have been reopened on Interstate 5 near Knighton Road after traffic was at a standstill, CalTrans reports that roads were open at 3:03 p.m. Sunday.

- 2:40 p.m. The CHP says that a wrong-way driver is to blame for this head-on collision.

According to CHP, a black Chevy Malibu was driving north on the fast lane on southbound Interstate 5.

The Malibu then hit a burgundy Honda Accord, which was traveling south on southbound Interstate 5. 

Eventually, the Malibu hit head-on with the Accord and also hit the center divider. 

An occupant of the Honda Accord died while an occupant of the Malibu suffered unknown injuries, according to CHP. 

We do not know how many occupants were inside each vehicle or if drugs or alcohol were involved. 

We will bring more information as it becomes available.

UPDATE - CHP has confirmed that one person has died as a result of this collision.

A two-car head-on collision on Interstate 5 just north of Knighton Road has caused a backup for traffic, according to the California Highway Patrol.

CHP is initially reporting that it happened around 12:17 p.m. Sunday and that one of the cars is flipped over and that a person is stuck.

We have a reporter on the way and will bring more information as it becomes available.
