National Diabetes Alert Day Highlights Health Risks in Shasta County

50% of adults in the county are pre-diabetic and another 11% have been diagnosed. The county and other organizations are looking to start programs to change those statistics.

Redding Calif.-- Today, March 27, 2018, is national diabetes association alert day and Shasta County is alerting its residents to an alarmingly high amount of residents that are considered pre-diabetic. Over half of the residents in the county are considered pre-diabetic and 70 percent of that number will develop diabetes in their lifetime. Another 11 percent of the county has been diagnosed with diabetes as well. Those numbers are shocking when you consider that Shasta County is known for having gorgeous scenery and wide open spaces in which are perfect to exercise and stay healthy. It’s not just a problem in this county. Cameron Lievense of Shasta County public health said today ”we are seeing an increase across the states… and we are also seeing a correlation with health… for instance people are being less physically active and eating more junk food.”

We have all heard of diet and exercise to stay healthy but it really comes down to simple lifestyle changes in order to stay healthy. There are many ways of adding healthy habits to your already busy day. Lievense suggested something like Taking your walk break and standing up instead of sitting while working. He also addressed that while gym time is good… it’s also not the whole story. “So it’s not just taking the day and anticipating oh I am going to get my one hour of exercise… its really adding exercise to your daily habit.”

That’s why the Shasta Family YMCA is working with the county in order to start a program to fight diabetes in Shasta County. Pauline Asbill today highlighted the program and said: “it is a CDC recognized program and the goals of the program are to lose 5 to 7 percent of your weight and increase your weekly exercise.” The YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program is a year-long program with 19 sessions in the first 6 months of the program followed by 6 monthly sessions in the second 6 months of the program. The goals of the program include incorporate healthy eating, increase physical activity, reduce stress and other behavior changes into their everyday lives. That program will launch this coming September and is available to all Shasta County residents even without a membership to the YMCA.
