Oroville, Calif.--The city of Oroville is in a financial crisis, but members of the public safety community are making a sacrifice which they hope will help the community.
On Tuesday night the city council unanimously approved a ten percent salary reduction for mid-manager officials; that includes meaning those who will be affected are the interim deputy fire chief, two battalion chiefs, two police lieutenants, the chief building official as well as the fire marshal.
This is not the first time that public safety officials in Oroville are taking a salary cut. Back in August all police officers, sworn and non-sworn, also received a ten percent cut.
Director of public safety Bill LaGrone said they are aware that the city has been facing economic troubles since 2013.
He said that they were not approached by anyone to make these cuts and that this is something that the Oroville fire and police association offered to do to help the community.
"This isn't just a fireman, these are young men and women that have families, that have children, that have responsibilities and this really affects their lives and I could not be more proud and pleased to stand by a group of people that is willing to do that because they care more about the community than they do about themselves," he said.
Mayor Linda Dahlmeier said that thanks to these salary cuts, it'll save the city about $70,000. All of that money will go into a new trust account with public agency retirement services.
