Oroville, Calif.--Dozens of concerned residents made their way to the historic Oroville State Theatre for Tuesdasy night’s city council meeting where the council voted no on whether to allow voters to decide on marijuana sales within the city.

We first told you about this issue last month after the meeting filled the council chambers to capacity, and that high level of interest is the reason this meeting had to be held at the state theatre.

A motion on whether or not to put marijuana sales as a question on the ballot this November failed after it was voted down 2-5. It is now up to the council to decide on future of marijuana sales and what exactly that will look like.

There is a lot of mixed opinions on allowing this in Oroville--some saying the council needs to consider the health benefits it offers, while others say that by having a dispensary within city limits, it’s creating easier access for children to the drug.

Many were vocal in saying that the ban on marijuana sales should not be lifted, noting it would be violating federal law and that it’s not just going to be affecting Oroville, but the county.

Mayor Linda Dahlmeier said that almost 56% of the city voted no on measure L in 2016 which would've allowed distribution, manufacturing and sales of marijuana. She said the decision should again be made by the people.

She along with council member Thomson were the only two to vote "yes" on allowing the public to vote on the issue this November, but that possibility was voted down 2-5.
