Tehama County, Calif. -- With fires burning across the North State, one shelter is open for both large animals and small pets that have to evacuate.

Rolling Hills Casino opens it's Equestrian Center doors to animals whenever there's an emergency situation.

"On the second ridge over we saw a fire start ... By 10 o'clock it had come over two ridges and the valley was filled with smoke," said Aaron Jennings.

A retired firefighter, Jennings knows the drill; as the Pawnee Fire crept all-too-close to blocking the escape route from his Spring Valley home, he knew he had to go.

"It started banking around and I knew it was going to close the valley, period," said Jennings.

But not without the whole family - including five goats and his Great Pyrenees.

Jennings headed to Rolling Hills Casino - where there are 300 stalls, cattle pens and 48 RV spaces open to any animal evacuees.

A big space, with a small and hardworking team in place.

"Pedro and I and Terry, that's it, and we do take care of them 24/7," said Carol Lawrence, who works at the Equestrian Center and volunteers when a need for shelter arises.

I asked her, "Have you gotten any sleep?"

"A little bit, not much, but a little. But we love it, that's why we do it," said Lawrence.

"So, so appreciative of the people out here providing these types of services because you don't know what to do, where to go, but when you have facilities and people like this, it's just wonderful," said Jennings.

Rolling Hills Casino is at 2655 Everett Freeman Way, Corning. (530) 528-3500.

Pawnee Fire evacuees can also bring their animals to the Social Service Center, 15975 Anderson Ranch Parkway, Lower Lake, CA.
