Severe heat & extreme fire danger are ahead for Northern California

A Heat Advisory and A Red Flag Warning are on the way for your weekend

Posted: Jun. 22, 2018 7:22 AM

Get ready for severe heat and extreme fire danger on the way for the next few days across Northern California. The warming trend has been somewhat gradual so far this week, but it is expected to kick it up a notch this afternoon. Sunny skies are expected for all of Northern California today, and temperatures are projected to be around 10 to 15 degrees above average for this time of year. We are starting out in the mid to high 60's in the valley this morning, and in the 40's to 50's in the mountains. Winds are out of the North to around 10mph early today, and will become slightly stronger heading into your afternoon. North winds of 10 to 15mph are expected later today. We could have humidity dipping into the single digits this afternoon, and that is not good news for fire danger. High temperatures are projected to end up in the 103 to 108 degree range in the valley later today, and in the 80's to 90's in the mountains. The breezy North winds, very low humidity, and triple digit high temperatures will all combine to result in high to extreme fire danger across Northern California today. A Heat Advisory is going into effect at noon today, and is scheduled to stay in place until 8pm on Sunday.

Temperatures are projected to stay as hot, or possibly get even hotter this weekend. Temperatures will range from around 104 to 110 degrees in the valley through the weekend, and mountain areas will end up in the high 80's to low triple digits. The severe heat, and very low humidity will continue to drive extreme fire danger through the weekend. A Red Flag Warning is set to go into effect at midnight tonight, and is scheduled to stay in place through 8pm Sunday evening.

Temperatures will dip back into the mid to high 90's as we head into next week. While not as hot as what we are expecting for the weekend, temperatures will stay above average next week. We are also expecting the trend of dry weather to continue across Northern California. Please keep an eye on those around you to monitor for signs of heat related illness through this heat wave on the way.
