This week's Subway Scholar Athlete has not let a devastating injury prevent her from continuing to play the sport she loves. Action News Now's Ross Field reports.

Chico High senior volleyball player Taylor Hensley is fresh off her most productive two matches of the season combining for 31 kills against Pleasant Valley and Shasta.

But, with her success it's easy to forget just how far the southpaw has come this season.

"Last October, I sliced three of my fingers, both tendons and both nerves," said Hensley.

The accident occurred while she was carving pumpkins with her friends and teammates.

"There was blood everywhere," Mikayla Nichols said. "Everyone was freaking out, some girls were helping her, other girls went inside not able to handle the situation, it was very scary."

"There were times when she thought 'hey I'm not going to play, that was certainly in question,'" said Lain Hensley, Taylor's father.

In question, but not a certainty.

Through grit and determination, Hensley made her return to the court

"After the three months, I finally got my hand back and recovery was hard, but I got back and I couldn't be happier," said Taylor Hensley.

But, she still deals with some pain.

"The nerves are still sensitive and they are hyperactive. When I hit the ball it's a much more excruciating pain than just a slap of a regular hand," said Taylor Hensley.

While Hensley was sidelined, she did her best to support her teammates and she also learned ways to stay on top of her studies even though she could not write with her dominant hand.

"I actually am able to write with my right hand, it almost it looks more like third grader writing, but I can get things written down with my right hand and I wasn't able to do that before. And it opened up my mind to how much I can actually do that my mind tells me I can't," said Taylor Hensley.

"Of course I'm super proud of her! She's definitely developed a new level of grit that's pretty exciting to see and now she's looking at where she wants to play in college," said Lain Hensley.

"She does not even complain about it, treats it like it's not even a big deal, didn't even happen and she's out there playing her game, so it's really cool. She's just a huge inspiration," said Mikayla Nichols.

So, for powering through adversity, Chico High School's Taylor Hensley is our Subway Scholar Athlete of the Week.
